If requested prior to the start of a course, Bag-Valve-Mask (BVM) Training can be added to your specific SAJE Vital Signs Training Session.
A BVM is used to provide air or oxygen to a victim who is no longer breathing or who is not breathing well. This process is commonly referred to as "bagging." When available, the BVM replaces the need to perform direct mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
The BVM consists of a flexible "bag" attached to a face mask via a shutter valve. When the "bag" is squeezed, the device forces air into the victim's lungs and when the bag is released, it self-inflates, drawing in air or oxygen supplied from a tank. A BMV can be used without being attached to an oxygen tank to provide air to the victim, but supplemental oxygen is recommended since it increases the amount of oxygen reaching the victim.
BMVs come in different sizes to fit infants, children, and adults. Some types of the device are disposable, while others are designed to be cleaned, disinfected, and reused. For more information, refer to the references below.

The bag is generally hooked to an oxygen supply that needs to be adjusted depending on the needs of the patient. After opening the airway, you will place the mask over the face and hold it firmly in position with the index finger and thumb, while the remaining fingers keep the jaw tilted upward. The other hand is used to compress the bag once every 5 seconds. Observe the chest and abdomen for expansion. If none is observed, the face mask seal may not be airtight, the airway may be blocked, or some component of the bag-valve-mask system may be malfunctioning. Detailed instructions will be provided by trained SAJE Vital Signs Instructors. |
